So consider how much full boarding is going to cost you, I’m going to assume that it will include the cost of hay, grain, shavings… figure if that’s a better deal for you in the long run then providing your own hay, shavings, etc (is he/she being stalled or kept outside)?

Wormer you can pick up for like 3 bucks if you buy the generic kind, or you can save more money buy buying those yearly worming kits which include the rotation of types that you need.

The cost floating seems cheap, you also may have missed the cost of sedation. I (personally) budget $ 200 for the cost of farm call, sedation, and procedure. If you do your teeth floating at the same time as vaccinations, you save the cost by having only one farm call.

What’s your riding like? If you have enough know how, you could cut your lessons down to bi-weekly to help with cost.

Cleaning bits: Nothing like run through the dishwasher. Or using vinegar or lemon to clean them with (lemon cut in half will brighten copper and steel like nobody’s business).

Baking soda mixed with water and turned into a paste can help clean white socks too!

You can save on money in other places then just the horse. Keep your budget under control by not eating out frequently, skip the cappuccino and save it for a treat, remember to turn lights off, turn the A/C onto power save mode when you aren’t home, turn your computers off at night (this trick saved $ 30/month on the electricity bill).

I would also like to suggest that you have not mentioned an emergency savings account. If you do not have one already, you should budget X amount per week (like $ 50 for example) that goes into a fund that you do not touch unless something breaks – and this includes the horse. This is a HUGE cost that too many people overlook and find themselves going into debt because of it.

You may also want to budget for supplements, depending on the horse.

Your home remedies need a little work :)

Don’t use Pine-Sol in fly spray. It’s a floor cleaner.

Don’t put baby oil on your horse, it will cause dust to stick to it and make your saddle slide.

Tomato sauce is very acidic and will corrode metal. And your bit.

Your brass cleaner is the recipe for a vinegar volcano minus the red food coloring.

Vaseline will rot the stitching in your saddle.

Listerine, wouldn’t use it for what you have suggested. It doesn’t grow hair or help dandruff.

Also don’t think shaving gel is going to make leather supple. Most actually dry skin out, I imagine it would do the same to leather. For the price of a can of shave gel and a jar of vaseline you can get a decent leather cleaner.

Finances look pretty good though. Just need an emergency vet fund. Murphy’s law of horses- If you don’t plan for big vet bills they WILL happen.

Yes, full board includes feed and hay costs, at least at all of my various barns- it is specified if you don’t get hay, shavings, or grain.
You are going to need to have your horses feet done more often (4-6 weeks is the norm, not 8), Vaccinations are also more expensive. I’m not entirely sure, but I think you worm more often too- once a month not every three months, but that depends on the area. I don’t know about any of your home made solutions. Mostly I think its easier to buy in bulk and use as little as possible.
